Sponsorship of events in the area has to be one of the more enjoyable aspects of marketing and particularly when the team at The Country House Company get involved. The photo board which is central to our joint marketing campaign with Hampshire Fare is being well received across the region at various events and was particularly well received at the Sparsholt Countryside Day on Saturday. Patrick Glynn-Jones, Head of Sales, joined in the fun and along with his daughters was entertained by various demonstrations and activities including sheep shearing, ferret racing, cattle show, pony rides, show jumping, cookery demonstrations, pedal tractor Grand prix and of course a souvenir photo in our photo board!

As Patrick commented;

“My two daughters and I spent a really enjoyable afternoon at The Sparsholt Country Fair on Saturday. There was an enormous amount to see and do with many stalls, demonstrations, country animals and food offerings…and all in pretty good weather. The Hampshire Fare board which we have sponsored this year was proving very popular and so Livi, Martha and I did our bit and stuck our faces into the spaces! This really is an event worth attending next year.

Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager at Hampshire Fare added
“We are really enjoying taking our new photo board to events across the county and beyond. It appeals to people of all ages and really cheers people up as they photograph their friends and family posing away! For us it is about building awareness of our food’s link to the Hampshire countryside and the board, made possible through The Country House Company, does this in such an engaging way”

In the right hands, gas is safe, however if things go wrong gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous substance produced by the incomplete burning of carbon-based products, such as natural gas and liquid petroleum gas (LPG). This happens when a gas appliance has been incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained. It can also occur if flues, chimneys or vents are blocked.

Carbon monoxide is known as the Silent Killer, because you can’t see it, taste it or smell it and it can kill quickly with no warning. Every year CO poisoning affects over 4,000 people in the UK.

Warning signs

The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness, are similar to the flu, food poisoning or a hangover; however there are other signs to look for. If symptoms only occur when at home, or if other people in the home experience the same symptoms at the same time, this could be an indication of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Other warning signs around the home are:

• lazy, yellow or orange flames – flames should be crisp and blue (note that some decorative-effect gas fires may burn with a yellow flame)

• dark staining on or around appliances

• pilot lights that frequently blow out

• increased condensation inside windows

Gas safety

It is important that all gas appliances are safety checked once a year by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Annual maintenance not only helps keep heating and hot water working properly, it helps keep your tenants safe. As a second line of defence, fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm in your rented properties, but remember, this is no substitute for regular servicing of all your gas appliances.

Landlords have a legal duty to maintain gas appliances that are provided and ensure a gas safety check is carried out every 12 months, by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. A copy of the Landlord Gas Safety Record must also be provided to the tenant(s).

Gas Safe has put together guidance factsheets for landlords and tenants. They set out landlord responsibilities and explain everything your tenants need to know when it comes to gas safety.

Gas Safe is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely and legally on gas appliances. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register, it replaced CORGI. For further information please visit www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk/carbonmonoxide

Whilst not startling in their positivity, there are nonetheless some good messages about the stable property market in spite of some economic headwinds. The widely used property portal Rightmove, have shown in their House Price Index that the average house price reached a record high in April, driven by strong buyer demand with the highest number of sales agreed since 2007, before the credit crunch. These statistics will have been helped by headlines in the last few days about the lowest mortgage rates for a generation. This should give confidence to those looking to sell or buy (or both) over the coming months. Let us know if you are inclined…we can offer some excellent tips and formulate the most appropriate strategy to suit you and your objectives.

Who could have imagined that one of the most significant documents in American history would be unearthed in Chichester! The Declaration of Independence parchment was discovered in a strong room in Chichester by an historian. Many believed that the only one is existence was across the pond in its rightful place in The National Archives in Washington DC. It is believed that ‘The Radical’ 3rd Duke of Richmond who lived at Goodwood House, might have been responsible for its existence in the county. He had many dealings with one of the founding fathers of the US, Thomas Paine who had lived in Lewes! Great to read about exciting discoveries in our area!
